Accessibility Statement

Last updated: May 14, 2026

Our commitment

OmeBate is committed to making its website accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as our baseline standard.

What we have done

  • Semantic HTML landmarks (main, nav, footer, header) are used throughout the site to support screen readers and assistive technology.
  • A visible “Skip to main content” link is provided for keyboard users and appears on focus at the top of every page.
  • All interactive elements (buttons, links, form fields) have keyboard-accessible focus indicators.
  • Colour contrast meets or exceeds the WCAG 2.1 AA minimum ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.
  • Both light and dark themes are supported; the site respects the user's OS-level preference on first load.
  • All images that convey information include descriptive alt text.
  • Mobile navigation uses ARIA labels for screen reader identification.
  • Cookie consent and other dialogs use appropriate ARIA roles and are keyboard-operable.

Known limitations

Some areas of the site are still being improved:

  • Real-time debate rooms contain dynamic content updates that may not be fully announced by all screen readers. We are working to improve live region usage in these areas.
  • Some third-party components (Google AdSense ad units) are rendered by Google and may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. We have no direct control over their accessibility implementation.
  • Charts and data visualisations on leaderboard and analytics pages currently include limited text alternatives. We plan to add data tables as equivalents.

Technical specification

OmeBate is built with HTML5, CSS (Tailwind), and React/Next.js. It is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

  • Screen readers: NVDA (Firefox/Chrome on Windows), JAWS (Chrome on Windows), VoiceOver (Safari on macOS/iOS), TalkBack (Android)
  • Keyboard-only navigation on desktop browsers
  • Browser zoom up to 400% without horizontal scrolling on most pages

Regulatory context

This statement is made in accordance with the EU Web Accessibility Directive (2016/2102) and the UK Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. While these regulations primarily apply to public sector bodies, we adopt them as a voluntary standard.

Users in the United States should be aware that we are working towards compliance with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and Section 508 guidelines where they apply to commercial web services.
